Applying to the Animation Foundation

In order to be accepted onto an Animation Foundation, such as that at Atelier de Sèvres, you will have to follow certain steps in order to optimise your chances of success.

If you wish to enrol on the Animation Foundation to train for the competitive exams to the top Animation schools, here is a brief summary of what might be expected of you, as well as the specifics of the Animation Foundation at Atelier de Sèvres.

Entry requirements, enrolment and interview: all you need to know to enrol on the Animation Foundation at Atelier de Sèvres, with the advice of Catherine Totems, head of the animation foundation and animation degree course at Atelier de Sèvres.

Animation Foundation entry requirements

Entrance to the Animation Foundation is based "usually on the interview in the last year of high school, whatever subjects are being studied, with a selection of personal work" (Catherine Totems). The usual application procedure is to contact the institution of your choice directly to make an appointment with the admissions officer for an interview.

However, some foundation courses at publicly funded schools can be applied to via the Parcoursup platform (formerly "Admission Post-Bac" or APB) during your last year at high school year. The standard entry requirements are as follows: you must be under 26 years old and have a strong interest in your chosen specialisation as well as an academic or self-taught experience.

Students in their last year of high school, aged 17 to 24, studying any subjects, can apply for admission to the Atelier de Sèvres, without going via the Parcoursup platform, and enrol on the Animation Foundation. While an academic artistic experience is not mandatory, you will need to showcase your drawing skills, your creativity and your methods of communication as part of the enrolment process and an overall review of your motivations.

What should I include in my application for the Animation Foundation at Atelier de Sèvres?

If you wish to join the Animation Foundation at Atelier de Sèvres, you must create a personal portfolio. This should enable teachers to assess your technical and creative abilities, as well as your motivation to join the foundation course.

There is no minimum number of works required to register at Atelier de Sèvres. You are simply asked to choose recent work so that your abilities can be evaluated accurately.

For example, you can include sketchbooks, photos, prints and any other means of expression and communication that you use.

During this individual interview, you must demonstrate your motivation and discuss with the interview panel so that they can assess your general artistic knowledge, your creative abilities and your open-mindedness.

This interview is not an exam, but rather an exchange to get to know you better. At the end of this interview, you will know if you have a place on the Animation Foundation at Atelier de Sèvres, and you can then proceed with enrolment.

The training is complemented by workshops and conferences during which students can interact with visiting speakers.

"It is important to go to the open days of the foundation schools, to learn about the entrance exam success rates, to look at the training and the subjects taught and to discuss with the students in situ," explains Catherine Totems.
